About

About Me:
I've been a bit of a Ronin regarding my martial arts training. Unfortunately, I haven't really kept good records of my experiences but the following is my best attempt at writing it out.

-Learned fundamentals of Shorin-ryu Karate from father as a child.

-Trained in Tae Kwon Do for a few years back in the mid 80's at a Hong Kong Kim branch school in Newport, KY. Received rank of red belt/black tip.

-Trained a year or so with a guy teaching Ninjutsu (he represented himself as a black belt but later learned this probably was not true).

-Trained with Eldon Clem at the Cincinnati Academy of the Martial arts (later I.M.B. of Cincinnati) from around 1991 to sometime in the mid 90's. After taking some time off,  I again trained with Eldon for a year or two when he moved to Hebrew Union College. The curriculum incorporated Jeet Kune Do (concepts, kickboxing and trapping) Boxing, Muay Thai, Kali/Escrima, and some Shoot Wrestling. Later also incorporated BJJ.

-In early or mid 90's I began training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with Steve Watkins who was at the time a blue belt under Rickson.

-Between 6 to 8 private lessons sometime in the late 90's with Sakasem Kanthawong at Siam Muay Thai Kickboxing in Indianapolis.

-Trained at Carlson Gracie Jr's school in Cincinnati for about 8 months sometime in the late 90's or early 2000's

-Helped instruct classes at Impact Martial Arts, a school ran by Dennis Landrum and affiliated with Jeet Kune Do instructor Paul Vunak (Progressive Fighting Systems).

-Progressive Fighting Systems - Phase I Instructor - 1999

-Sometime around 2008 - 2009, I trained for a year at Son of Siam Martial Arts in MMA and BJJ.

-While at Son of Siam I received my blue belt in BJJ from Bill Peace (at the time a brown belt, currently a black belt under Shawn Hammonds.

-Taught a basic four week self-defense workshop with Clyde Arnold In late 2021.

-Began coaching a casual BJJ training group once a week in early 2021. Mostly friends that are older.

-Not mentioned were the many training partners throughout the years, working out in basements, garages and parks.

Writing this out is not an attempt to stroke my ego. Actually, it's just the opposite. I've always tried to be humble regarding my martial arts training but also want to be as honest as possible about my background. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when I come across instructors that are deceitful or try to make themselves seem more of an expert than they really are.
