Knife Defense For The Street - Burton Richardson

Volume 1

The Goal, Go Home Safely 0 - 3:14
1. Fighting Goal: Go home safely
2. Training Goal: Every time you train, work to improve your functional skills.

Proper Safety Equipment 3:14 - 8:19
-Padded Training Knife
-Caged Headgear
-Padded Forearm Protection

Real Knife Attacks 8:19 - 12:15
-Security footage of real knife attacks.

Knife Attacks - Simplicity 12:15 - 14:53
-Realistic knife defense must be simple.

Knife Attacks - Attacker has the Advantage 14:53 - 16:17
-Knife attacker has the advantage which means you have to be much more aggressive than him/her.

Type of Knives 16:17 - 19:15
-Fixed blades -folding knives -kitchen knives (most commonly used) -video of a woman using scissors in a fight.

Grips 19:15 - 20:57
-Hammer grip
-Ice pick grip (reverse grip)

Mindset - Always Expect a Weapon 20:57 - 24:02
-Demonstrates and shows video of  a guy using the double neck tie and not seeing the opponent draw a knife and stabbing.

Mindset - Controlled Aggression 24:02 - 25:56
-Must be very aggressive but still in control (don't be so wild that your technic completely goes out the window). You are aggressive but still keep your cool.

Mindset - Courage to Step In 25:56 - 28:21
-You must have courage to step in. Can't go halfway. The natural reaction is to try and grab the knife hand but also to try and back up to get away from the knife. You've got to have the courage to move forward instead and get control of the knife (when you can't run away).

Mindset - Never Quit 28:21 - 30:10

Proper Practice Methods 30:10 - 34:37
-Be a good practice partner. Don't pull back or hold a pose. It's ok to work at lower intensity but still should mimic a real attack.

Popular Knife Defense Approaches 34:37 - 38:39
-Talks about problems with some popular methods such as x-blocking, figure fouring the arm, passing the arm, block and punch at the same time, etc.

Ranges-Ring of Fire 38:39 - 41:08
-Long Range - Opponent can't hit you without moving forward.
-Middle Range - In range where opponent doesn't have to move forward and can get the most power with thrusts and slashes. The ring of fire.
-Close Range - Clinching range where opponent can still hit you with the knife but you have the best change of getting control of the weapon arm.

Plan of Action 41:08 - 45:24
-Ex. Aggressor is at a distance and brandishes a knife. Run away.
-Ex. You see aggressor drawing the knife and believe you have the space, run away.
-Ex. He has the knife and you are grappling with him and you feel he is very powerful. He pulls back and you feel you may be able to escape, run away. This is a real judgement call. Realize he may chase you.
-Ex. May be able to stun and run. Realize the danger involved.
-Basically, get breakaway and get distance whenever you realistically can.

Break Distance and Arm Yourself 45:24 - 48:23
-When you can't just runaway, the next step is to try and break distance and arm yourself. Ex. if your opponent begins to draw a weapon you create distance and draw your weapon. Ex. opponent goes to draw weapon, you step back and grab an improvised weapon such as a chair.

Deflect, Smother, Control 48:23 - 52:24
-You couldn't run away. You couldn't break distance and arm yourself. Deflect, smother and control.

Post Disarm Tactics 52:24 - 56:17
-Once in close you generally are either going for the disarm or break away and escape. Realize if you get the disarm and opp. is passive you can't go after them with the knife. Of course if the continue to attack you, then you can then use the knife against them.

The fasted way to stop someone when it is justified, is to cut the neck area around the carotid artery and brachial plexus.

Volume 2

The Six Control Positions 0 - 6:40
1. Two On One Baseball Bat Grip
-Two on one grip on wrist and forearm. Get in close with is arm over your shoulder and position so his arm is carrying your weight. Turn your back to him so he can't easily switch the knife to his other hand.

Baseball Bat Grip 6:40 - 11:42
-This is just a repeat of what was just covered (seems to be an editing fluke).

Other Controlled Postions 11:42 - 16:37
2. Inside Wrestling Capture (Wrestling Two On One) - Your body is positioned inside his arm. Left hand on Opp. wrist, right hand above opp. elbow.
3. Outside Wrestling Capture - Your body is positioned outside opp. arm. Right hand grabs opp. wrist, left arm grabs opp. bicep.
4. Inside Overhook - Your body is positioned inside opp. arm. Overhooking around opp. wrist.
5. Outside Overhook - Your body is positined outside opp. arm. Overhooking around opp. wrist
6. Arm Drag Position - Left hand grabs opp. wrist, right hand behind opp. tricep. This is a very temporary position.

Counterattack

1. Attack on Intention
2. Attack on Preparation - Anytime before the opponent's attacking motion. Examples might be the opponent pulls his arm back or steps forward.
3. Attack on Delivery - The period in the middle of an opponent's attacking motion, just after it starts but before it hits its target.
4. Attack on Completion - When opponent's attack reaches full extension.
5. Attack on Recovery - is just before the opponent recovers his original fighting stance (the retraction of the arm or leg).

Getting off the (Train) Tracks

A simple concept I've seen mentioned in videos by coaches Marvin Cook, Phil Normand, Teddy Atlas & Trevor Wittman.

Footwork Blueprint Trevor Whittman

Vol. 1
Stepping With Punches
-Talks about not being too wide or narrow with stance.
-Talks about not getting too wide which decreases your power by limiting the rotation of your hips.
-Talks about lifting with punches.

1-2 Carry Hip, & 1-2 Step Over @4:47
-1-2 Step Over->2
-1-2 Carry Hip->1-2
Drill
-1-2 Step Over->1-2 Hip Carry

Open Stance: Understanding The Cross-Foot Position @12:00
-Open stance is orthodox vs southpaw.
-Talks about the general rule of having your front foot outside your opponents front foot.
-Talks about not being too wide when you step forward outside the opp. front foot to attack. Discusses the foot trap.

Lead Hand Control/Hand Fight @13:38

Feint Power Hand For Angles @18:29
-1) Feint the cross. Once opp. steps to the outside, you immediately do a step over and follow up with punching (Trevor used a rear uppercut, lead hook follow up).

-2) Feint the overhand (do a small slide step with your back foot to steal a step). Opponent covers high and or pulls back. Follow up with lead hook -> cross.

Show With Open Stance @22:00
Same as 2) above but from an open stance.

Add The Hook, Add The Uppercut @24:01
-1-2 Step Over w/ Hook.
-1-2 Carry Hip w/ Hook
-Shows the 1-2 Carry Hip w/h Hook with the Hook hitting feeders should (as a way to train it)
Drill 1-2 Step Over w/ Hook -> 1-2 Carry Hip w/ Hook

Anchor Steps @29:20
-1) Lead Leg Anchor Step - Slip to the left w/ left leg stepping to the left. Immediately Push off the left foot as you come back with the left hook.
-2) Rear Hand Anchor Step - This is a pull. Back leg steps back as you lean the upper body back. Immediately push off the back foot as you come back with a cross.
Drill
-Put them both together.

Slips And Loaded Slips @32:50
-When slipping, hips and head are counter balancing each other (hips and head opposite direction to maintain balance).
-Says he is not a fan of loaded slip. A loaded slip is slip where you turn your body in a way which loads your counter punch. Basically keep twisting to a minimum.

Rolling and Slips Opening Shoulders For Rolls @37:05
-His rolling (weaving) motion is a little different.
-When rolling under a lead hook, you basically move forward with your forehead toward the opponents lead shoulder, then roll under the arm. The footwork seems to be front foot moves foreward then back foot takes a big step up and to the side.
-When rolling under a

Vol 2
Pool Noodle
-Uses for positional drills.
-Demonstrates various ways to get in on your opp.
-Use of two pool noodles

Hula Hoop Drill

Tools of Engagement @10:15
-Use of body shield with pool noodle

Drop Step @12:42
-Basically a simultaneous cross to counter a cross. Rear foot steps to the side and pivots and your head slips to the outside of his cross as you throw your cross at the same time.
-Hit trainers shoulder to practice
-Combo: Drop Step Cross->Lead Uppercut (pivoting off the front leg to get an angle)->Jab->Cross

Switch Hook @15:52
-Switch step to lead hook
-Drill: Switch step to lead hook to switch step lead hook

Switch Uppercut Off Jab @17:55
-(matching stances) Switch step slipping opp. jab to lead uppercut.
-At 18:25 he shows the technique where he slides past opp.
-Getting head outside of opp. shoulder is key.

Adding Slips Into Combos @19:28

Pimp Step @21:15
-When throwing the lead hook, left foot steps off to the side but with the toes turned in. Then your right foot slides back so that your body is not positioned off to the side. Come back 1, 2.

Vol 3
Lead Foot/Rear Foot Jab
-Basically a steal a step move.
-First jab, the rear foot slides up putting you in a narrow stance. Second jab pushing off the rear foot.
-Second version: As you slide the rear foot up with the first jab you are also slightly pivoting on the front foot. Now on the second jab you have a slight angle.
-Third version: First jab, rear foot steps up to your right to create an angle. Second jab push off the rear foot.

Setting Up Head Hooks With Body Hooks @4:18
-Lead body hook (you see there dropping arm) Lead head hook

Setting Up Overhand With Body Shot @7:41
-Demonstrates the slip & hit to the body counter to opp. jab. This gets opp. concerned about the body. He then does a cross counter against the jab.

Open Wing Jab @10:45
Lead arm movement which causes the opp. to believe that a lead hook is coming but is actually a jab. Using curving footwork with it.

Body Jab @12:56
Jab to the body retreating to your lead (left) side

Using Body Jab To Set Up Overhand @16:38
Jab to body to rear overhand.

Sliding Lead Foot Off The Track To Set Up Power Jab @20:19
-Basically a step pivot and jab.
-Shoulder stays pointed as you (almost like your throwing a little bit of a hook), sliding your lead foot up and to the side so that it is lined up with opp. rear foot (foot turned in). Small pivot on the lead foot. Once back foot lands
-Lead hook using the same footwork to jab

Right Hook To The Body Setting Up Power Hook To The Head @22:55
-Right hook to the body, to lead hook to the head.

Dozier Drill

Five (technically Pepper Popper) targets placed 1 yard apart and 7 yards from the shooter. On the signal, shooter presents the pistol and shoots down all five targets. For a little added pressure, you can time the Dozier Drill. Five seconds is a really good time, 4 seconds gets you into expert territory and 3 seconds is outstanding.
